Interface Design

CMQ

Training Simulation

CMQ is an interactive training simulation designed to help Quality Assurance Specialists (QAS) develop hands-on measurement skills in a virtual environment. The simulation guides learners through selecting the right tool, measuring parts, and determining whether they meet tolerance requirements—all essential tasks in real-world inspections. By replicating workplace scenarios, this training provides a practical, repeatable way for QAS professionals to refine their skills before applying them on the job.

project details

Execution

To bring this simulation to life, I worked in Unreal Engine to manipulate and view 3D assets, collaborating closely with designers to ensure accuracy. The training incorporates randomized part measurements, allowing learners to experience different scenarios each time they engage with the simulation. One of the biggest challenges was the lack of Subject Matter Experts for certain measurement tools, particularly vernier calipers. To ensure precision, we reached out to Starrett for image licensing and reference materials. Throughout development, we also adhered to DAU branding and accessibility standards to create a polished and inclusive learning experience.

The storyboard was supplied by the client for my review and implementation.

First mockup of prototype

The GLB files were provided by our 3D designers. I utilized them in Unreal Engine and Babylon.js to capture various angles for interaction icons.

Results

The final simulation provides QAS professionals with a realistic, interactive training environment that closely mirrors the measurement tasks they perform in the field. Because of its repeatable nature, learners can practice as many times as needed to build confidence and accuracy. End users successfully trialed the prototype, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving measurement proficiency and tool selection skills for workplace applications.
